Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Water Temp: 84-87
Water Clarity: Clear

The fishing has been pretty tough. Flipping the grass seems to be the most consistent bite. I have caught a couple on a frog, and that should really turn on in the next couple of weeks. The best baits for me right now are Strike King Rodents, Topwater baits, and the Strike King Sexy Frog. There are also some good fish being caught on big worms at night right now. The fishing will improve when we get some cooler temperatures.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Date Fished: 8/6/2011
Water Temp: 88-92
Water Clarity: Slight Stain

The fishing is still really tough on Guntersville. I believe August is the toughest month on Guntersville. There are millions of shad all over the lake. The bass seem to only be eating those tiny shad. However, the white bass are really busting the shad right now. The white bass are really fun to catch, and anybody can catch them. I caught some last week on a Strike King Sexy Spoon and a lipless crankbait.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Date Fished: 7/20/2011
Water Temp: 89-92
Water Clarity: Clear

I fished for a little while after work today, and did not do much good. The extreme heat is really making the bite tough. I only caught two, and then got stormed out at about 7:30. Hopefully, the next time I report things will have improved.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Date Fished: 7/16/2011
Water Temp: 84-86
Water Clarity: Clear

We fished Saturday and had a tough day. We only put two keepers in the boat. One of them came off a swimbait and the other came off a crankbait. It seems to be pretty tough right now. There are not many people on the water at all. I plan on fishing at least twice this week, and I will let you know how it goes.

Fishing Report

I was on vacation all last week in North Carolina. I fished all week for trout. I caught several rainbow and brown trout throughout the trip. We had a really great time enjoying the beautiful country up there. I plan on fishing Guntersville this week, and I will let you know how I do.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Date Fished: 6/25/2011
Water Temp: 80-83 deg.
Water Clarity: 1-2 ft.

We fished the Honeycomb Open on Saturday. We caught our fish in 3-8 ft of water. We wound up catching 8 keepers with the biggest five weighing 13 1/4 lb. The tournament took 24 lb. to win. Most of our fish were caught on big worms, beaver style baits, topwater plugs, and crankbaits. The recent rains have cooled off the water a little bit, and that can only help the fishing.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

Date Fished: 6/12/2011
Water Temp: mid to upper 80's
Water Clarity: 1-2 feet
We fished a tournament out of Goosepond on Sunday. The tournament was a benefit tournament to raise money for the local recreatinon centser. It was a three fish tournament, and we only wound up catching three small keepers. It took over 16lb. to win the tournament. We caught most of our fish shallow first thing on topwater. We spent the rest of the day fishing deep trying to get a big bite and struck out. Most of the big fish are being caught out of the deep water right now.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

The fishing has been pretty good here lately. I fished May 27-30, and caught a bunch of fish. However, most were in the two to three pound range. We fished the Honeycomb open tournament on May 28th, and just had a small limit that weighed 12.75 lb. We fished this past Friday and Saturday, and caught better quality both days. We fished the Honeycomb Open Saturday, and finished fourth place with 18.72 lb. The water temp is in the mid to upper 80's. You can catch quantity shallow right now, but the quality fish are deep. We have been catching them on poppers, soft plastics, jigs and crankbaits.

Catching Up

The past few weeks have been pretty crazy. With the recent deadly tornadoes, clean up, and having some wisdom teeth cut out I have not been on the water that much. I have my family, my house and little damage. There are people in this area who have lost loved ones and have lost EVERYTHING. My heart and prayers go out to them. I was able to get some fishing in this week. I fished on Thursday after work, and did not even put a fish in the boat. It felt good to be on the water again though. The lake was really low on Thursday, and that may have hurt me. I fished the Wal-Mart BFL Saturday as a co-angler on Saturday. I weighed in 9lb. 12 oz. and it took 13+lb. to get a check. We fished shallow grass all day with swimbaits, worms, and frogs. The water temp is 77-81 deg. and the grass has really exploded just in the past couple of weeks. I will be on the water soon and I will let you know how I do.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

I have fished Thursday and Friday of this week. Thursday I did some pre-fishing after work for an upcoming tournament. I caught 6 keepers that ranged from 2 1/2lb. to 3 1/2lb. Friday we fished the Huntsville Utilities Tournament. We had a great boating 22 keepers, but we never could get a big bite. We finished 5th out of 29 boats with 15.20lb. We have been catching them on worms, square bill crankbaits, swimbaits, spinnerbaits, and topwater baits in 6ft of water or less. I think right now you could catch them on just about anything. I will be back on the water within the next few days, and I will let you know how I do.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

My brother and I fished the Honeycomb Open this past Saturday. We caught two over 3lb. and a 4lb.3oz. fish in the first 45 minutes of the tournament. Then after that the bite just died on us for some reason. We did not catch another keeper for the rest of the tournament. It was extremely windy. I believe it was probably the roughest I have ever seen Guntersville. We still had a lot fun, and I will be back on the water this week. I will let you know how I do.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

I fished the Wal-Mart BFL as a co-angler this past weekend. I had another tough tournament only weighing in two small keepers. We fished in 6-12ft of water the whole time, and they are just not in the deeper water right now. I caught a lot of short fish, but just never could get anything going. We camped all weekend at Goosepond Colony. I fished Saturday and Sunday after the tournament. We caught a ton of 1-3lb fish all weekend, but it seemed the big females were not biting. I think all they had on their minds was spawning and not eating. However, right now is a great time to take the family out. There are thousands of 1-3lb fish up shallow and they are fairly easy to catch. We caught all of our fish on ribbontail worms and finesse worms in 5ft of water or less.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

I fished Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.. I had a pretty tough afternoon. I caught three keepers with the biggest weighing 3 1/4 lb. I am still catching them on crankbaits in 4-7 ft. of water. The fish I caught today came off a Bandit 200 and a KVD 1.5.

Lake Guntersville Fishing Report

I have fished Tuesday and Thursday of this week after work. The fishing has been pretty good this week. I only have about two hours to fish after work, but it is definitely worth the trip. I fished by myself on Tuesday, and I boated two fish. My brother and I fished on Thursday. We boated four fish with the biggest fish weighing 5lb13oz. I have been catching all of my fish in 4-6 feet of water on a KVD 1.5.

Number Your Cranks

I was not able to fish today as I had planned due to a family illness. However, I did take the time to organize my tackle. Many anglers would agree that organization is a major key to success. Staying organized helps you fish more effectively because the time you spend looking for a bait could be a missed opportunity of catching fish. One way that I stay organized is I put the depth of each crankbait on the belly of the bait. I put the maximum depth that the crankbait will run. I simply use an ultra fine point sharpie, and write the maximum running depth on the bottom of the crankbait. Looking through a box filled with crankbaits can be a little overwhelming. This tip can help you simplify your selection of a crankbait for the particular depth you are fishing.

Guntersville Report

I fished Tuesday of  this week for about two hours after work. I caught one solid three pound fish, and that was all I caught. I had fish blowing up on shad all around me. They seemed to be just keying in on 1-2 inch shad and that was it. I had planned on fishing today, but the severe weather has pushed my trip back to tomorrow. I will let you know how I do.

Guntersville Lake Fishing Report

This report is for this past Thursday and Saturday. Thursday I fished with a good friend of mine Clayton after work. We only were able to fish for about two hours. However, we did manage to put five keepers in the boat. We were never able to get a big bite, but it was a lot of fun anyways. We caught all of our fish on shallow running crankbaits in 2-4 feet of water. We had fish busting on top all around us, and I did have one blow up on a buzzbait. That was exciting to see that the topwater bite is just around the corner.
Saturday I fished the Wal-Mart BFL as a co-angler. It was an extremely tough day. I caught a keeper in about the first 10 minutes of the tournament, and that was the only fish I weighed. I caught one other short fish and had several other fish pull off. My boater had three fish that weighed somewhere in the nine pound range. The fish that we caught came on shallow crankbaits and chatterbaits in 2-4 feet of water. There was a bunch of guys that struggled in this tournament. I think it kind of shocked everybody, because we were all expecting a slug fest. The only factor I can think of is that they were pulling the lake down really quick, and that affected all of the fish that are up shallow.

Upgrade Your Hooks

Factory Hooks (Left) KVD Elite Series Trebles Hooks (Right)

Many of you know that this is the time of year to be throwing lipless crankbaits. However, I see many people that do not have much success fishing these baits, because of the high percentage of losing fish while fishing with these baits. I have been using Mustad KVD Elite Series Treble Hooks, and they have helped my catch ratio tremendously. They feature wide gap hooks that help keep the fish on once you hook them. Also, they have a shorter shank so that you can increase the size hooks you put on your baits. I typically will go up a size from the factory hooks that come on a bait. If I have a lipless crankbait that has factory #4 hooks on it I will go up to a #2 Mustad KVD Elite Series Treble Hook. What is great about these hooks is when I upgrade to a larger size the hooks do not get tangled together while retrieving the bait like most other hooks do. Next time you throw a lipless crankbait don't get caught with the factory hooks on it.

Catching Up

Here are some of the big bass that I have caught in the past. Most were caught on Lake Guntersville. The smallmouth were caught on Tims Ford Lake. In the future, I hope to post new pictures as I catch more fish. Keep checking back to see how the fish are biting!
